1. ‘Salem’s Lot is a small town in Maine with a dark history.
2. Earlier than the novel, a gangster lived there with his wife and did all kinds of bad things, and then later in the 1950s, a young boy named Ben Mears went to the house where the mobster/gangster lived (where the gangster had died some years earlier) and went to the top of the stairs and saw his ghostly form.
3. Years later, Ben Mears returns to the town, now a famous writer, and decides to begin writing a novel to work through his feelings about that experience he had as a child.
4. There are lots of kooky characters that live in the town of ‘Salem’s Lot, and many of them have dark secrets, but generally they’re nice Maine folk.
5. Vampires show up and ruin the whole thing.
